DESIGN for RESEARCH
Agile or waterfall
I am a digital media specialist working at The Open University – that’s me in the picture waving my arms around!
I provide design methods to assist research colleagues in their practice. I do this by shaping design processes suited to the needs of individual researchers or research teams.
I also offer freelance design services, so feel free to get in touch.
I can draw upon over 25 years professional experiences across early multi-media pioneers, advertising agencies and corporate communications.
At The Open University I have contributed as design lead on our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), The Virtual Microscope and nQuire.
I enjoy finding a form of participatory design between myself and the researchers. This form of engagement ensures everyone is fully involved in the outcome.
I can help if you need to form a design process or perhaps develop a system.
User experience (ux) and user interface (ui) design practice to enhance your online product.
Add a temporal dimension to your project and further communicate your research.
Complete design to print service in the form of research documents, posters and flyers.
Designed to evidence research
Add voices to your research
Design to grow your research
Allow surprises to delight
I was commissioned by the University of Birmingham to visualise astronomical data using motion design.
User journeys travel from one device to another, from the desktop to a mobile device via PDF – responsive and adaptive design – your data needs to keep up!
Research process dovetailed to a design process for better outcomes when helping widen participation.
SEO means search engine optimisation and is just one of the numerous considerations needed to help with the outreach of your research work.
I have agency experience working with clients such as Disney, Philips.
Learning and teaching – helping researchers maximise their impact.
Build trust through positive working relationships.
Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely.
Responsive to the needs of the researcher.
I have worked with researchers at The Open University and the University of Birmingham.

I periodically update my blog to showcase the little things which excite me about design.
The little things might include new software, new techniques, new books, old methods. Anything which makes the day feel a little better.
